Company Profile

Established in 1971, Surgetek specialises in all aspects of earthing, lightning and overvoltage protection. During this time, the company has played a major role in drafting relevant SABS earthing and lightning protection codes such as 03A, 03 and 0199. Today, the codes 03A and 03 have been replaced with SANS 0313, which incorporates the whole IEC suite of documents. Surgetek’s highly experienced senior staff has served on the various SABS IEC liaison committees. Today the company has extended its product range beyond just lightning and surge protection to also include electrical safety equipment and electrical test and measurement equipment too.
On 1st October 2004, Prime Empowerment Group Limited (Primgro), a local black economic empowerment company acquired Surgetek. However in April 2009 Premesh Narismulu (Surgetek’s MD & CEO) & Alicia Nydoo (Executive Director) led a management buyout of the company from Primgro & ABSA.

Quality of product

Nearly all the company’s power protectors have the SABS mark of approval, and many of these products are specified by major users, such as mobile telephone networks, mining houses and the petroleum industry, to name a few. During the infancy stage of the mobile telephone industry, various telephone networks made use of Surgetek’s expertise and protection devices to protect their installations from lightning and surge damage. Today, their products and expertise are still being used.

Quality assurance

Some time ago, a company decision was made, supported by all personnel, to have Surgetek listed with the ISO 9001 Quality Assurance Programme. Certification was awarded during July 1999.

Quality of service and support

Ongoing training programmes are provided for all personnel to create a continuous quality of service and installation awareness. This has had a very positive response from clients and numerous letters of recommendation have been received. Surgetek has been appointed by the majority of local industry as their accredited supplier and contractor.

Experience

For over 3 decades, Surgetek has been involved in many of the large projects in Southern Africa. For example, the company has been actively involved with earthing and lightning protection for Telkom, Sentech, Cell C, MTN and Vodacom. It has also operated as both supplier and consultant on numerous projects outside the South African borders.

DEHN has also been involved both as supplier and consultant with nearly all the mobile telephone service providers in Europe and Asia. Today, this earthing standard, combined with the DEHN range of surge arresters, is synonymous with the mobile telephone industry. Surgetek was responsible for the earthing and external lightning protection for the following projects: Koeberg Nuclear power station - Secunda Collieries - Anglo Gold - Anglo Coal - Ingwe Coal - Pelindaba - Velindaba - Iskor - Vanderbijlpark, Pretoria, Sishen, Newcastle and Tabazimbi.

The company has also been responsible for major projects in the petrochemical industry, including Sasol 1, 2 & 3, Mobil, Engen, Caltex, Total and Trek petroleum, both Durban and Cape Town, and Karbochem Newcastle. Surgetek has also been involved both as supplier and consultant on numerous projects outside our borders. Successfully completed projects have been concluded in Botswana, Swaziland, Lesotho, Tanzania, Uganda, Nigeria, Namibia, DRC, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Kenya and Malawi.

Their current client base includes electrical consulting engineers, architects, mining houses, mobile telephone companies, metropolitan councils, government departments, water affairs, computer companies, military and police force.
